In this holistic shift in the structure of society and its
relation to nature, all aspects of culture are evolving. Developments in each
domain – values and knowledge, demography and social relations, economic and
governance institutions, and technology and the environment – interact with
changes in the others in an amplifying and accelerating global process. The
threads of connectivity grow longer and denser: economic interdependence,
far-flung cultural influence, earth-shrinking communications technology,
geo-political entanglement, and environmental degradation. In the maelstrom of
transition, the very coordinates through which history moves – time and space –
seem altered. The rapid pace of change quickens historical time and the
crystallizing global system expands social space to the scale of the planet. In
a world flying blind toward a dubious future, we struggle to know what to think
and how to act.
